Here at Garden Style Direct, we don’t need much excuse to have a barbecue and this week is National BBQ Week so why not get some lovely garden furniture and put some steaks on your barbecue.

To celebrate National Barbeque Week we thought we’d let you in on some interesting facts and figures about the UK’s BBQ habits.

• In 2009, the UK was Europe’s leading BBQ nation – hosting 120 million BBQs and beating the Germans into second place for the 3rd year running.
• Official figures show that actually 49 per cent of barbecues are cooked by women, but maybe it’s just that they take over once the men get bored!
• The overall BBQ, alfresco eating & entertaining market is now worth just over £7 billion, up from £150 million in 1997.
• Over 70% of households own a barbecue.
• The average number of BBQs held per family over the summer has risen from around 4 five years ago to over 9 today.
BBQ & alfresco eating has now become a standard alternative summer meal, with nearly 50% of the UK population now considering it normal to barbecue or eat outside during the summer.
• The occasion is still also perceived to be an indulgence or treat with 37% likening a BBQ to a dinner party.
• The majority of consumers will spend £35 on barbecue food and drink up from just £19 five years ago.
• Thanks to the gas barbecue becoming increasingly popular (40 per cent of us have them, rather than charcoal models), the food tends to taste less of paraffin and more of, well, food.
